Marie Curie

SMV.(Science; Music. ver)의 두 번째 만남입니다.
Hello, this is your DJ, Mi Hyun Kim and I guess this is the second time of SMV.

As you know, holiday season is just around the corner.
For me, it's a really long vacation, and I'm wondering your ones.

Today, I'll introduce you to the second scientist, Marie Curie.

She, who is familiar to us as Mrs. Curie, born in Poland in 1876's winter.

She was a Nobel laureate in chemistry in 1911 and physics in 1903.
She also had a great achievements, which are discoveries of radium, radioactivity and so on.

She was a widow and her country,
Poland was colony throughout her life.
She suffered from the war and death
and died from accumulation of radioactivity.

In fact, her life was not just beautiful,
but it was kind of a shady and exhausted one.

Not having an idea of ecstasy and passion from finding
and researching something scientific things,
I can focus on her daily life easily.
That's why the sad image would come to me.

During the preparation of this posting, I could look into one woman's life.

It's like, say if I passed by the window with the curtain
which I felt almost nothing from it.
And then the other day, I saw some things through that curtain.

First of all, through the curtain, there would be beautiful rose in the terrace,
and the second, the curtain looks like normal but in fact,
it was smooth and decorated with laces.
And for the last, through the curtain,
you would see two girls chasing each other joyfully.

Anyway, her life was not that light as I imagined.
But that doesn't mean that it was an easy one.
If I compare her life with color, achromatic color could be the best expression.
Not the one color but many colors, like "achromatic color rainbow."

How about music in her life?

She shared her scientific discoveries
with other people in various kinds of fields.
That 'fields' were music, especially musical.

The Curie's discovery of radium in early 20th century
brought great curiosity to many people.
Loie Fuller, such a popular American actress, was one of them

She read the article in the newspaper about the lighting of radium,
and thought of the custom that could give curiosity to her audience.

And she directly asked Mr. and Mrs. Curie of that.

Her simple and honest letter made them happy
and they were willing to send Loie reference of radium.

After that, Loie was caught applause every night,
and she devoted herself to new genre of color dancing in the dancing history.

Loie wanted to give some presents for her helpers.

She didn't bluff the connection between the Curies
and didn't invite them in purpose.

She just sent one more message to them and visit them with electricians.
And they created the stage in the kitchen while the Curies were in the lab.
Finally she performed only for the Curies.

Of course, they had a great time with Loie,
and after that she sometimes visited them and had a performance there.
It was high qualified performance and completely only for the Curies.

That communication between the Curies and Loie beyond friendship
and fields is like consilience in recent days.

Marie Curie's music was a kind of communication and sharing.

Now let me show you some songs.

Loie Fuller is known as the first dancer
who introduced Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Debussy's music in concerts.
And I'll present some songs that would play in the concert stage.

Arturo Michelangeli - Debussy Reflets dans l'eau

Debussy - Debussy Golliwogg's Cakewalk (1913)
